Fish Facts: Our Spanish Mackerel is wild caught using hardlines and pole-lines off the coast of Boston. These elusive fish are known to be fast swimmers, predatory by nature, and fierce fighters when caught. Seasonal fishing is allowed for this species which guarantees sustainability and excellent quality. Mackerel is rich in mono and poly-saturated fatty acids, while also maintaining a low level of saturated fats. These factors can aid in lowering your cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease. Mackerel is also an excellent source of vitamins B6, B12, magnesium, and phosphorus.
Taste/Cooking: Spanish Mackerel is considered to be an oily fish, this gives the flesh a mild flavour that flakes off in small, firm chunks. The meat located at the midline of the fish tends to have a heavier flavour than that of surrounding areas. This can be identified by a brown line separating the loin and belly of the fish and can be removed upon request. Common methods of preparation include broiling, grilling, baking, or smoking. This fish would pair well with our Miso Paste, Teriyaki, Japanese Togarashi, as well as others.
