Origin: New Zealand
Fish Facts: Greenshell or Kiwi mussels are known for their vibrant green shell and meat that ranges from a cream colour (Male) to apricot colour (female). They are grown using a sophisticated suspension technique from 6 different growing areas along the costs of Coromandel to the Waiheke Islands. The icy cold waters provide the perfect environment for the mussels to grow succulent meat. The Greenshell Mussels are also native to New Zealand and can not be found anywhere else in the world.
Taste/Cooking: Compared to other shellfish, mussels contain higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids as well as others. For approximately 100g of mussels, you will get ≈20g of protein, ≈23% of your daily recommended dose of Vitamin C, and ≈37% of your daily recommended iron. Common methods of preparation include steaming, braising, or adding to any soup/chowder. Mussels are a very versatile ingredient, however, a popular pairing would to be to serve in a tomato sauce with garlic and fresh herbs or steamed with white wine and onion.
