Fish Facts: Sockeye Salmon, also known as, Red Salmon, Blueback Salmon, or Kokanee Salmon is the third most common species of Pacific Salmon. Although this type of salmon is not the largest, it packs a lot of flavour, perfect for experienced fish eaters that appreciate a strong fish flavor. Distinguishable by its bright blood orange color, Sockeye Salmon truly is a west coast essential.
Taste/Cooking: When compared to other Pacific Salmon, the main differences of Sockeye are the color of the flesh, texture, and taste. Flesh pigmentation is far brighter and more vibrant in the Sockeye whereas the texture is not as fatty but is dense and buttery. The flavour of Sockeye is often described as having a more pronounced fish flavour as opposed to other species. Common methods of preparation include grilling, baking broiling, or pan frying. This fish would pair well with our house fresh herb mix, teriyaki, miso marinades, as well as others.
