Fish Facts: Abalone are marine snails known for their single, ear-shaped shells with a nacreous (mother-of-pearl) interior and a muscular foot they use to cling to rocks and move slowly. Abalone are found in coastal waters around the world, inhabiting rocky bottoms from the intertidal zone to deeper reefs.

They often seek shelter in rock crevices or under rocks. 

They are herbivores that primarily eat algae and have a culture and historical significance in many coastal communities, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Abalone are valued both for their edible meat, a delicacy, and for their beautiful shells, which are used in art and jewelry. 

Taste: Abalone tastes sweet, buttery, and briny, with a delicate flavor and a unique chewy or crisp texture similar to scallops or calamari. Its flavor can vary, with wild abalone often having a stronger, saltier taste than milder, farmed abalone. Properly tenderized abalone can have a rich, umami flavor.
